Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine blends the wisdom of nature with modern science to deliver whole-person, root-cause care. Through thorough assessment and an individualized plan, we support your body’s innate ability to heal; so you can restore balance, cultivate deeper vitality, and step into your vibrant becoming.

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary healthcare profession that emphasizes prevention, treatment, and optimal health by using therapeutic methods that support the body’s inherent self-healing process. It blends modern and traditional approaches, drawing from scientific evidence as well as clinical experience.

Naturopathic doctors are guided by the Six Principles of Naturopathic Medicine, the foundation of naturopathic medical education and patient care. These principles reflect a commitment to treating the whole person, identifying root causes, choosing the least forceful effective intervention, teaching patients how to cultivate wellness, and preventing illness whenever possible. The Therapeutic Order builds on these principles to guide clinical decision-making and emphasize the determinants of health as a central part of care.

The Six Principles

1) The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae)
Your body has an ordered, intelligent capacity to heal. Naturopathic care works to identify and remove obstacles to healing, and to support the natural processes of recovery and regulation.

2) Identify and Treat the Cause (Tolle Causam)
We aim to uncover and address the underlying causes of illness rather than simply suppressing symptoms.

3) First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere)
Naturopathic physicians prioritize safe, least invasive options by:
• using methods and substances that minimize risk of harmful side effects
• avoiding the harmful suppression of symptoms when possible
• acknowledging and working with the body’s own healing processes

4) Doctor as Teacher (Docere)
Education is part of the medicine. We help you understand your health, build skills, and strengthen self-responsibility, while honoring the therapeutic power of the doctor patient relationship.

5) Treat the Whole Person
Health is shaped by your physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, and social context. Naturopathic care considers the full picture, because symptoms rarely exist in isolation. (Some people also find that spiritual wellbeing is an important part of health, and we welcome that dimension when it’s meaningful to you.)

6) Prevention
We prioritize prevention by assessing risk factors, heredity, and susceptibility, and making proactive, supportive interventions in partnership with you.

What naturopathic care can include

Naturopathic medicine includes a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic tools. Depending on the practitioner’s additional training and state licensure, care may include clinical and laboratory diagnostics, nutrition and lifestyle counseling, botanical medicine, physical medicine (including manipulative therapy), counseling, homeopathy, acupuncture, prescription medication, injection/IV therapy, minor office procedures, and more.

At Listening Ways, we use a thoughtful, stepwise approach, starting with foundations and choosing the least forceful intervention that’s safely indicated.

Naturopathic Education

Naturopathic doctors complete a rigorous, four-year, doctoral-level medical education through CNME-accredited programs recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Their training includes the same core biomedical sciences you’d expect in conventional medical education such as; anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, neuroscience, pharmacology. This is paired with extensive supervised clinical training and patient care. Some naturopathic physicians go on to attended residencies programs while others step directly into clinical roles upon licensure.

Graduates must also pass the national board licensure exams (NPLEX) administered by NABNE—exams required for licensure/registration in regulating jurisdictions.

What makes naturopathic medicine distinct is the lens. Naturopathic doctors are whole-person, systems-based, root-cause care. This training prepares naturopathic physicians to serve as primary care doctors where licensed, while drawing from a wide therapeutic toolkit including nutrition and lifestyle medicine, botanical medicine, pharmaceutical herb drug interactions, physical medicine, mind–body approaches, and more,  help restore balance and support lasting vitality.
